Backgrounder
Many regions in Burkina Faso and neighbouring countries have been affected by violent attacks at the hands of armed extremists, creating an internal displacement crisis that leaves millions of people without shelter, potable water, and economic opportunity.
How is PeaceForward delivering aid?
PeaceForward is working to establish favourable conditions for the advancement of 25 potato-growing cooperatives in the Guiriko Region of Southwestern Burkina Faso. With the help of irrigation, potato farming in Burkina Faso takes place in the lengthy dry season, when few other agricultural activities are possible.
These cooperatives have functioned independently of foreign aid for more than ten years, presenting growers with the possibility of potato production that goes beyond the needs of the household and offers a viable commercial opportunity. PeaceForward advances growing conditions in a way that combines mechanical and technological improvements with social mechanisms that increases the participation of Burkinabe women in the regional economy, empowering them to succeed both in the production of a quality crop and increased revenue that puts children through school, nutritious food on the table, and a sense of solidarity among the potato growers of Guiriko.
Specific Objectives
- Support 25 potato-growing cooperatives of Guiriko with seed saving initiatives, soil enrichment, and mechanical and logistical support.
- Increase the number of women farmers and vendors by delivering training for the financial management of the annual crop.
- Ultimately, the success of a high-quality product in the regional markets of Guiriko and northern Ivory Coast.
