Purpose Of Corporation / Déclaration d’intention de l’organisation:

  1. To advance education by providing publicly available scholarships, bursaries, and other forms of financial assistance to students who are in need to be used for elementary, secondary, or post- secondary education.
  2. To advance education by providing classes to students and teachers on the subject of Peace Education.
  3. To relieve poverty in developing and post-conflict countries by providing basic necessities of life, including food, clean water, clothing, and/or shelter to individuals or families who are experiencing poverty, of low income, or in need.
  4. To relieve poverty and advance education by providing farming tools, seeds, resources, equipment and training in farming techniques to individuals in need in emergency and post-conflict regions.
  5. To undertake activities ancillary and incidental to the attainment of the above charitable purposes.

Position Requirements:

  • Commitment to Mission:Strong commitment to PeaceForward’s mission, values and goals.
  • Legal and Governance:Knowledge of Canadian legal requirements, governance best practices and compliance for international NGOs.
  • Financial Management:Knowledge of financial statements, budgeting, annual reporting, and financial oversight of an NGO.
  • Education/Curriculum/Projects:Knowledge of education, curriculum, and development programs to provide strategic guidance and oversight. This includes knowledge and experience in Monitoring and Evaluation.
  • Fundraising, Communication and Advocacy:Experience in fundraising strategies, donor relations, funding and grant submissions and awards.
  • Canadian Based:as the PeaceForward is registered and governed by Canadian law and regulations.
  • International Experience:The knowledge or experience working in the international context to understand the complexities of global operations in cultural sensitivity.
  • Diversity, Equity & Inclusion:Commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion principles to ensure that the programs are inclusive and responsive to diverse needs.
  • Cultural Sensitivity:Respecting diverse cultures, beliefs, and practices is essential to foster trust and collaboration with PeaceForwards global partners.

Board Member Responsibilities:

The board members will promote proper governance and high ethical standards in PeaceForward’s operations.

The Board Members shall be responsible for:

  • Financial oversight
  • Determining the nonprofit’s the mission and primary objectives
  • Ensuring the nonprofit is legally compliant
  • Holding the nonprofit accountable and ensuring it is operating ethically
  • Strengthening the organization’s operations through high-level strategic planning
  • Representing the organization in the public eye
  • Fundraising and development tasks on behalf of the organization, making their financial contributions while also working to secure additional funds, primarily by asking key people within their networks.
  • Review and advise the Directors on policies and systems significantly impacting organizational performance and effectiveness, financial management and reporting, the internal audit, investigation and evaluation functions, the internal ethics function, and the effectiveness of PeaceForward’s systems of internal control and accountability; including its governance, risk management and control processes;
  • Review and advise on PeaceForward’s financial statements and reports, including any significant changes in accounting policies, presentation and disclosures;
  • Advise on any proposed changes to the Financial Regulations and Rules
  • Meetings - As we are a start-up and waiting on charitable status from the CRA, Board Members shall meet at least three times a year. The Board Member or the Director may request additional meetings to discuss particular issues on which advice is sought. Meetings will typically be conducted virtually via video, teleconference, or Zoom.
  • Time Commitment - A board member is expected to serve for 3 years per term and can be re-elected for a maximum of 9 years. A maximum of 20 hours devoted per month.
