Rebuilding Safe Learning Environments for Conflict-Affected Children: A Localized Education for Peace Initiative in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC)

Since the beginning of 2025, the intensification of conflict in North and South Kivu has resulted in the closure of more than 2,500 schools and learning spaces, depriving vast numbers of children of access to education. Reports estimate that over 1.6 million children in eastern DRC are currently out of school.

Area: North and South Kivu provinces, specifically in Sake-North Kivu, Minova, Kavumu and Kamanyola in the South Kivu.

How is PeaceForward delivering aid?

With partners Action pour le Développement et la Paix Endogènes (ADEPAE) on the ground we want to aim to complete the first phase:

Phase I:

To refurbish and equip eight conflict-affected schools in Minova and Sake (North and South Kivu) to ensure safe, inclusive, and resilient learning environments for minimum 6,000 primary school (grades 1-6) students and their educators.

Renovation of eight identified primary schools, including classrooms, administrative offices, and damaged latrines (benefiting approximately 6,112 students and 95 teachers).
Installation of handwashing stations to improve hygiene and reduce Ebola and Monkey pot virus and cholera, diarrhea disease transmissions.
Refurbishment work, including painting, window repair and roof reinforcement.
Provision of essential school furniture (desks, chairs, and blackboards).

Phase II:

Peace Education: Teachers will be equipped to deliver peace education and holistic support while students gain skills in resilience, wellbeing, and peaceful coexistence that extend beyond classrooms.
Nutrition and Health Support:
- Training for parents on food security and home gardening techniques.
- Training for parents on food security and home gardening techniques.
- Broadcasting of parental education programs.
